What a plumber is called for

Valves and taps are the part of the installation that wears most. A valve that drips or does not shut fully often does not need replacing as a whole, because a new valve head is enough. A tap that leaks or whose lever is stiff is often repaired by replacing the ceramic cartridge, and when the whole tap is replaced, a deck-mounted and a wall-mounted tap are different jobs with different lines in the price list. The angle valves under the washbasin and the sink are replaced when they no longer shut off the water to the tap or the cistern.

A water heater that does not heat is diagnosed first, and only then is a part replaced: the cause may be the heating element, the thermostat, the thermal cut-out or the safety valve. With a WC pan and cistern the usual faults are water running into the pan all the time, a cistern that does not fill, or a leak at the joint between them, and the flush mechanism and the fill valve are replaced without replacing the whole cistern. A concealed cistern is serviced through the service opening behind the flush plate.

How a visit goes

A call starts with a short description: what is leaking or not working, where and since when. The visit is arranged by phone within working hours, Monday to Saturday from 08 to 16, and a fault that risks a flood goes as an emergency call-out, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. On site the cause is established first, and the price of the job is read from the published price list before work starts. The call-out is charged once per visit, however many jobs are done, the work by the lines of the price list, and materials separately. For larger works, such as replacing worn-out pipes in a bathroom, a quote is made after an expert inspection on site, and the inspection fee is credited towards the price of the works if the quote is accepted.

A flat in a block and a house

In Belgrade blocks of flats the water and drain risers are shared by the whole entrance, so a fault on a riser is not one flat's business: a leak is often first noticed as damp at the neighbour below, and replacing a section of a riser means shutting off the water for several flats. Older buildings have galvanised steel pipework, which rusts inside over time, lowers the pressure and gives way at threaded joints, so when a bathroom is renovated such pipework is usually replaced with plastic pipes. A house has its own connection, a water meter chamber in the yard and its own drain across the yard, so a fault is traced from the chamber to the last tap.
