A fault in the appliance or in its connection

With washing machines and dishwashers the cause is often not in the machine but in what it is connected to. A machine that fills slowly may have a scaled-up angle valve or a clogged mesh at the hose inlet, while a machine that trips the breaker may be on a socket it shares with another heavy load. So the supply, drain and socket are checked first, and only then the machine.

Cookers, ovens and built-in hobs have their own rows in the price list for heating electrical appliance service: fault finding, replacing a hotplate, the oven thermostat and fan, and the power cable. A fridge that does not cool or builds up ice cannot be judged from a description; at the address it is checked whether the compressor, fan and defrost are working.

Built-in kitchen appliances

A built-in oven, hob, dishwasher and fridge sit inside the kitchen units, so for an inspection the appliance is first pulled out of its recess, taking care of the worktop and fronts. In kitchens where the old cooker was replaced by a built-in hob and oven, both are usually supplied from the same cooker circuit, and the dishwasher is connected to the sink trap.

Before the visit it helps to copy the exact model designation from the appliance's rating plate and to empty the unit in front of or below the appliance. The price depends on what has failed and whether the part can be obtained for that model. Connecting a washing machine or dishwasher to water and drain, and connecting a cooker, have fixed rows in the price list, while repairing the appliance is charged once it is established which part is failing.
