About the service

From crack to finishing coat

Painting work starts before the paint. Cracks are opened up and filled, chases left by new cables and pipes are closed, and stains from damp or soot are coated with a primer that seals them so they do not bleed through the new paint. Walls in older flats often carry several layers of old limewash; if they are flaking, they are scraped back to a sound base.

Skim coating means applying a thin layer of compound over the whole wall in two or more passes so that the surface becomes flat and smooth. After sanding and dusting, the wall is primed and then painted in two coats. Painting without skimming makes sense when the wall is already flat and only needs new colour. For kitchens and bathrooms a paint that withstands moisture and washing is chosen, and a ceiling is rolled in the direction of the light from the window so that roller marks do not show.

How to prepare the flat for painting

Furniture is moved to the middle of the room or taken out, and whatever stays is covered with sheeting. Floors are protected with cardboard, and sockets, switches, skirting boards and window frames are masked with tape. The emptier the room, the less work goes into protection, and that shows in the bill as well.

The price per square metre changes with ceiling height, the number of openings and corners, the condition of the walls and whether the whole wall is skimmed or only patched. Flats in old town houses in the city centre have high ceilings and decorative mouldings, which need scaffolding and more hand work, while flats in the blocks have lower ceilings but often concrete walls on which the skim needs a special bonding primer.

Questions

Questions and answers

Painting and decorating: how much does the call-out cost?
A booked call-out within working hours and within the regular service area costs 2.500 RSD. Labour, materials and parts are billed separately from the call-out. An expert inspection on site and a quotation for larger works are charged 4.000 RSD, and if you accept the quotation, the amount paid is credited in full against the agreed price of the works.
Who supplies the materials?
The client can supply the materials, or by agreement we can source them. When we source the materials, the client receives a clear breakdown of the materials installed and the work done.
Painting and decorating: is there an emergency call-out?
No. Emergency call-outs cover plumbing faults, electrical faults and locks. Work in this trade is scheduled during working hours, Monday to Saturday from 08 to 16.
Which parts of Belgrade do you cover?
We work all over Belgrade. The regular service area is eight municipalities: Stari Grad, Palilula, Zvezdara, Vozdovac, Vracar, Savski Venac, New Belgrade and Zemun. For the other parts of the city the call out price is confirmed when booking, and for addresses outside Belgrade availability and arrival terms are checked by phone or enquiry.
Does a wall have to be skimmed before painting?
No, if the wall is flat, free of cracks and the old paint holds well. Skimming is done when the wall has unevenness, marks of old repairs or chases, because paint does not hide them but shows them up, especially in light falling from a window.
What is done about damp stains on a wall?
The cause of the damp is dealt with first, and only then the wall. A stain from a leak or condensation that is simply painted over comes back; once the cause is fixed, the spot is dried, coated with a sealing primer and only then painted.
Can a flat be painted while people are living in it?
Yes, room by room, if the furniture from the room being done is moved into another. The order of the rooms is agreed in advance, and a room goes back into use once the paint is dry and the space has been aired.
