About the service

Measuring the opening and fitting new windows

A window is made to the size of the masonry opening, with a gap that allows for fitting and for the profile to expand. Old timber windows in Belgrade buildings are often double, with two sashes one behind the other, and once they come out the opening is wider and more uneven than it looks, so the reveals are finished after fitting.

PU foam goes between the frame and the wall; on the outside a tape or sealant protects it from water and sun, and on the inside a vapour-tight tape. The profile is chosen by the number of chambers and the type of glass, and aluminium is used where larger openings, slim profiles or balcony glazing are wanted. If the window is to have a roller shutter, this is settled before measuring, because the shutter box changes the height of the opening the window is made for.

Existing windows: hardware, seals and condensation

A PVC window that closes stiffly, lets air through or whose sash scrapes the frame often does not need replacing. The hardware is adjusted for the height and pressure of the sash, hardened seals are replaced and moving parts are lubricated. When a sash drops along its diagonal, the cause is often the hinges or the glazing packers. On balcony doors the threshold is checked separately, because that is where water from the balcony gets in most easily.

Condensation on the glass in winter says more about the humidity in the flat and the ventilation than about the window, but when water stands on the bottom of the frame the profile's drainage holes are checked too. The price depends on the number and size of sashes, the type of profile, glass and hardware, and finishing the reveals after fitting.

Questions

Questions and answers

PVC and ALU joinery: how much does the call-out cost?
A booked call-out within working hours and within the regular service area costs 2.500 RSD. Labour, materials and parts are billed separately from the call-out. An expert inspection on site and a quotation for larger works are charged 4.000 RSD, and if you accept the quotation, the amount paid is credited in full against the agreed price of the works.
Who supplies the materials?
The client can supply the materials, or by agreement we can source them. When we source the materials, the client receives a clear breakdown of the materials installed and the work done.
PVC and ALU joinery: is there an emergency call-out?
No. Emergency call-outs cover plumbing faults, electrical faults and locks. Work in this trade is scheduled during working hours, Monday to Saturday from 08 to 16.
Which parts of Belgrade do you cover?
We work all over Belgrade. The regular service area is eight municipalities: Stari Grad, Palilula, Zvezdara, Vozdovac, Vracar, Savski Venac, New Belgrade and Zemun. For the other parts of the city the call out price is confirmed when booking, and for addresses outside Belgrade availability and arrival terms are checked by phone or enquiry.
What does the number of chambers in a PVC profile mean?
It is the number of hollow spaces in the profile's cross-section; more chambers usually means better thermal insulation of the frame. The insulation of the whole window depends more on the glass and the quality of fitting than on the number of chambers alone.
Does replacing a window mean chiselling and a lot of dust?
Less than people expect: the old frame is cut and taken out, and the edges of the opening are patched and finished after fitting. The most mess comes with old double timber windows, where the old finishing around the frame is removed too.
When does a PVC window need its hardware adjusted?
When the sash closes stiffly, when the handle has to be pressed hard to shut the window, or when a draught comes in along the edge of the sash. The adjustment is made at the hinges and on the sash hardware, without taking the window out.
