About the service

Substrate and waterproofing before the first tile

A tile is only as flat as the surface it is stuck to. A wall left with holes and old adhesive after the old tiling came off is levelled first, and the floor is checked with a straightedge and spirit level so that water in the shower area runs to the drain. In a bathroom, waterproofing goes on the floor and the lower part of the walls before tiling, with tape in the corners and around pipes, because grout alone does not hold water back.

The adhesive is chosen for the substrate and the place: one kind for underfloor heating, another for a balcony, and large-format tiles need adhesive both on the back and on the substrate. Grouting is done once the adhesive has set, and the joint between a bath, a shower tray or the floor and the wall is sealed with silicone, not grout, because those joints move.

What changes the price per square metre

Tiles are charged per square metre, but the same square metre does not cost the same in every bathroom. The price changes with tile format and laying pattern, the number of cuts around pipes, risers and windows, edges and trims, and whether the old tiling is removed and the substrate levelled. A small bathroom has many corners and cuts on a small area, so it is charged by the actual work involved.

In Belgrade flats from the 1970s and 1980s the bathroom is usually renovated together with the pipes, so the tiling goes on only once the new pipework is finished and pressure tested. It is wise to buy tiles with a reserve for cutting and breakage, from the same batch, so that a later repair matches the shade.

Questions

Questions and answers

Tiling work: how much does the call-out cost?
A booked call-out within working hours and within the regular service area costs 2.500 RSD. Labour, materials and parts are billed separately from the call-out. An expert inspection on site and a quotation for larger works are charged 4.000 RSD, and if you accept the quotation, the amount paid is credited in full against the agreed price of the works.
Who supplies the materials?
The client can supply the materials, or by agreement we can source them. When we source the materials, the client receives a clear breakdown of the materials installed and the work done.
Tiling work: is there an emergency call-out?
No. Emergency call-outs cover plumbing faults, electrical faults and locks. Work in this trade is scheduled during working hours, Monday to Saturday from 08 to 16.
Which parts of Belgrade do you cover?
We work all over Belgrade. The regular service area is eight municipalities: Stari Grad, Palilula, Zvezdara, Vozdovac, Vracar, Savski Venac, New Belgrade and Zemun. For the other parts of the city the call out price is confirmed when booking, and for addresses outside Belgrade availability and arrival terms are checked by phone or enquiry.
Can new tiles be laid over old ones?
Yes, if the old tiles are firmly bonded and flat and the extra thickness does not get in the way of the door, the drain or the taps. Tiles that sound hollow when tapped have to come off, as does the tiling on a wall where pipes are being replaced.
Can just the grout be renewed without removing the tiles?
Yes: the old grout is raked out to sufficient depth and the joints are filled with new grout. This makes sense when the tiles are sound and the grout has darkened, cracked or lets water through in the shower area; if water is already getting behind the tiling, the waterproofing is redone as well.
Why is waterproofing needed if tiles do not let water through?
Because water does not pass through the tile but through the grout, the joints and around pipes. Without waterproofing moisture gets into the wall and into the ceiling of the flat below, and it is needed most in a shower area without a bath, around the drain and where the floor meets the wall.
