About the service

Which situations are emergencies

An emergency is anything that does damage while you wait. A burst pipe or a burst hose on a water heater, washing machine or tap floods the floor, and water passes through the slab to the flat below. A valve that will not close turns even a small leak into an emergency, because there is nothing to stop the water with. Waste water coming back through the WC pan, a floor drain or the bath spreads across the floor and under the tiles. Sparking, smoke, the smell of burnt insulation, an overheating socket or fuse board, and water reaching sockets or cables carry a risk of fire and electric shock. A locked door, a key broken in the lock or a lock that will not lock leave a home with no way in or no protection.

A dripping tap, a cistern that keeps running, a slow sink or a socket that does not work but neither heats up nor sparks are not emergencies. They are booked within working hours, Monday to Saturday from 08 to 16, at the price of a scheduled call-out.

What to do until the craftsman arrives

With a leak, first close the flat's main valve, and only then look for where the water is coming from. If the water heater is leaking, switch off its breaker as well, because the element must not run in an empty tank. Wipe up the water around sockets, move things the water can damage off the floor and, if water is coming through the ceiling, tell the neighbour above, because the valve that needs closing is in their flat.

With an electrical fault, switch off the breaker for that circuit or the main switch at the fuse board, if you can reach the board over dry floor. If the board is sparking, smoking or wet, do not touch it and do not put it out with water; in a block of flats the flat's power can also be cut at the fuses by the meter, often in a cabinet on the staircase. With a sewage overflow, stop running water, because every bit of water you run comes out in the same place. With a locked door or a key broken in the lock, do not try to force the lock open, because a damaged lock then needs a bigger job.

How the emergency call-out is charged

The emergency call-out costs 12.000 dinars and covers coming to the address at any hour of the day or night, all 7 days of the week. Diagnostics, work, materials and parking costs are charged separately, by the lines of the same price list that applies to scheduled work, and work at night, at weekends and on holidays carries its own surcharge in the price list. The jobs that come up most often with emergencies also have their own lines: closing and reopening the main valve, shutting off the water to the building together with the responsible service, and fault finding in the electrical wiring.

On site the damage is stopped first, then the cause is established, and the repair method and the price are explained before work starts. A scheduled call-out within working hours costs 2.500 dinars, so a fault that can wait until morning is cheaper to book.

How an intervention works

Three steps

01 · The callDescribe to the duty service what is happening. For emergency interventions we are available at night, on Sundays and on public holidays.
02 · Assessment and making safeOn site the situation is assessed first and, where necessary, further damage is prevented. Once the cause is established, a method of repair is proposed.
03 · Work and billingThe emergency call-out is 12.000 RSD. The work is charged separately, according to the job established on site.

Questions

Questions and answers

Where is the main water valve in a flat?
Usually in the bathroom or the kitchen, where the water pipe enters the flat, sometimes behind an access panel in the tiles, and in some buildings in a shaft or a cupboard in the corridor. In a house the main valve is in the water meter chamber in the yard. It is worth finding it and trying it before you need it, because a valve that has not been turned for years often does not close fully.
What if the flat's main valve does not shut off the water?
Then the water is shut off for part of the building or the whole building, at the riser valve or at the building connection. That valve is usually in the basement or a shared room, and shutting off the water to the building sometimes involves the responsible service and is a separate line in the price list. So when you call, say that the main valve does not close.
Can an emergency be fixed temporarily and the repair booked for later?
It can, when that is technically possible: first the damage is stopped, for example the water is shut off or a circuit is switched off, and the final repair, if it needs a part to be ordered or a larger job, is arranged for working hours. Even then the work is charged by the lines of the price list, according to what was done.
