About the service

Sanding and varnishing old parquet

Solid oak or beech parquet in older Belgrade flats is often sound under the old varnish and can be restored. Sanding removes a layer of wood together with the old varnish, stains and scratches; the floor is then fine-sanded, the joints filled, and it is varnished in several coats. Before sanding it is checked that the blocks are firm and that there are no nails in the floor that would damage the machine.

Loose or creaking blocks are glued back down, while blocks that are water-soaked, burnt or eaten away are replaced before sanding, preferably with blocks of the same wood. Varnishes differ in sheen and hardness, so they are chosen according to whether the room is a hallway, a living room or a bedroom.

Laying laminate and parquet: the base decides

New parquet is glued to a flat, dry screed, so the screed's moisture is measured before laying, because parquet on a damp base swells and comes away. Laminate is laid floating on an underlay and needs an expansion gap along the walls and thresholds, which skirting boards and transition strips cover. If the floor has underfloor heating, parquet and adhesive suited to it are chosen, and the heating is switched off before gluing.

The price per square metre changes with the type and pattern of the parquet, the state of the base, the number of rooms and thresholds, removing the old floor and whether furniture has to be carried out. Sanding an empty room is one job and sanding around built-in wardrobes, radiators and steps is another, so the area and the obstacles are looked at on the visit.

Questions

Questions and answers

Parquet and flooring work: how much does the call-out cost?
A booked call-out within working hours and within the regular service area costs 2.500 RSD. Labour, materials and parts are billed separately from the call-out. An expert inspection on site and a quotation for larger works are charged 4.000 RSD, and if you accept the quotation, the amount paid is credited in full against the agreed price of the works.
Who supplies the materials?
The client can supply the materials, or by agreement we can source them. When we source the materials, the client receives a clear breakdown of the materials installed and the work done.
Parquet and flooring work: is there an emergency call-out?
No. Emergency call-outs cover plumbing faults, electrical faults and locks. Work in this trade is scheduled during working hours, Monday to Saturday from 08 to 16.
Which parts of Belgrade do you cover?
We work all over Belgrade. The regular service area is eight municipalities: Stari Grad, Palilula, Zvezdara, Vozdovac, Vracar, Savski Venac, New Belgrade and Zemun. For the other parts of the city the call out price is confirmed when booking, and for addresses outside Belgrade availability and arrival terms are checked by phone or enquiry.
How many times can parquet be sanded?
As many times as the thickness of wood above the tongue of the block allows. Solid parquet in old flats usually takes several sandings, while engineered parquet has a thin top layer and can be sanded less often or not at all.
Can laminate go in a kitchen or bathroom?
In a kitchen yes, if the laminate is made for it and the joints by the sink and dishwasher are protected; in a bathroom ordinary laminate is not a good choice. Water that gets into a joint swells the board edge, and that is not fixed by drying but by replacement.
What needs to be done before parquet sanding?
Clear the room of furniture, rugs and everything standing on the floor. While sanding and varnishing are under way nobody stays in the room, and the varnished floor is not walked on and furniture is not put back until the varnish has hardened.
