Gutters and downpipes: fall, brackets and joints
A horizontal gutter must fall towards the downpipe, otherwise water stands in it and leaves and silt settle. Brackets are set at spacings that carry the weight of water and snow, and the joints and end caps of the gutter are sealed. The downpipe is run down the facade in clips and at the bottom led into a gully or drain, so that water does not spill along the foundation. Above entrances and terraces snow guards are also fitted on the roof, so that snow does not slide into the gutter and bend it.
The sheet is chosen to suit the roof and its surroundings: galvanised, colour-coated, copper or aluminium. Different metals are not joined directly, because corrosion starts at the joint, so patches are also made of the same material as the gutter.
Flashings and repairing roof drainage
Water most often gets into a loft not through the tiles but along the chimney, around a roof window, in the valleys and where the roof meets a wall. Those spots are covered by sheet-metal flashings, which on old houses have often corroded or been patched with sealant instead of being replaced. A sheet-metal window sill must slope outwards and have a drip edge, so that water does not run down the facade below the window.
On buildings with flat roofs the work is edge flashings and outlets through the parapet, and on houses gutters and flashings around the whole roof. The price depends on the length of gutter and the number of downpipes, the type of sheet, the height and the access: a gutter on a single-storey house is fitted from ladders, while on a multi-storey building it needs scaffolding or work at height with fall protection.
How billing works
Work in this trade is calculated per square metre or per item, so a separate quotation is prepared after a visit and measuring on site. An expert inspection on site and a quotation for larger works are charged 4.000 RSD, and if you accept the quotation, the amount paid is credited in full against the agreed price of the works.
